Structured data (schema): markup for AI & Google
Structured data is machine-readable markup added to your page source (in JSON-LD format): it says 'this is a product, this is its price, this is the seller'. Google uses it for rich results (stars, price); AI answer engines trust it to classify the site and cite sources. Missing it doesn't break the page, but lowers the odds machines understand you correctly.
How does a machine 'understand' your site?
To a crawler the page is text — a human reads "Linen Shirt — $45", a machine guesses. Structured data removes the guesswork: {"@type":"Product","name":"...","offers":{"price":"45","priceCurrency":"USD"}} explicitly declares what the page is, its price and its seller. For AI answer engines this declaration is a "safe to cite" signal.
Which types matter?
- Organization: on the homepage — company name, logo, contact, social accounts. Like an identity record.
- Product + Offer: on every product page — price, stock, currency. The base of rich results and AI product answers.
- BreadcrumbList: shows the site hierarchy.
- FAQPage: Q&A content — gives answer engines a directly quotable format.
- WebSite + SearchAction: if you have site search.
Verify yourself
Three ways: (1) search the page source (Ctrl+U) for application/ld+json; (2) give the URL to validator.schema.org — it lists parsed types; (3) for a product page use search.google.com/test/rich-results — it shows the rich-result eligibility Google actually sees. Ticibu’s AI Visibility Center checks whether JSON-LD blocks in one sample product’s initial HTML can be parsed. This does not establish homepage or full-catalog coverage, complete schema fields or rich-result eligibility.
How to add it on Shopify
Most modern Shopify themes already emit basic Product schema on product pages — but missing price/stock fields and absent Organization on the homepage are common. You can add a JSON-LD block to your theme's product.json/main-product.liquid templates or use an app. What matters is the output passing the validator cleanly — markup believed added but broken is better than none yet still faulty.
Frequently asked questions
Does structured data raise rankings?
It's not a direct ranking factor — but it affects rich-result click-through and machines understanding you correctly; the indirect value is real.
Is it required for AI visibility?
Not mandatory, but one of the strongest signals — if the answer engine can't classify your content, the odds of citation drop.
Are OG tags and JSON-LD the same thing?
Different: Open Graph is for social share cards (og:title, og:image); JSON-LD is for search/AI understanding. Evaluate them for their different purposes; finding one does not validate the other.
These guides explain technical checks. Passing them does not guarantee search ranking or inclusion in AI answers.
